Health Screening is an important part of health promotion efforts, as recognized by our Singapore government. There is an emerging emphasis on health screening as seen in the nationwide Integrated Screening Programme that screens for chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, breast cancer, cervical cancer and colorectal cancer. The Singapore Healthcare system promotes healthy lifestyle as well as preventive quality health programmes. Asia Healthpartners believes in such a mission in ensuring affordable, evidence based and seamless healthcare.
Health screening is internationally recognized as a cost effective way to identify and treat health problems before they develop or worsen. A stress free 2 to 3 hour comprehensive health screening can help to prevent major complications of common diseases. Many chronic medical problems are taken for granted by the general public. A person with high blood pressure, who takes good care of his health, can live to a ripe old age of 80 years old, travelling around the world in 80 days. But a person with the same condition who does not bother about his health may live to the same age bedridden due to stroke. Likewise, a diabetic patient can enjoy a happy long journey of life with healthy lifestyle and appropriate medications guided by the family physician. Or the diabetic patient can ignore the importance of lifestyle modifications and medications and suffer the consequences of dialysis. Every year, there are more and more new patients with kidney failure requiring dialysis. The cost of dialysis does not come cheap – about $100 per day. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure in Singapore. Hence healthy living, health screening for chronic diseases such as diabetes as well as partnership between the family physician and the patient will all contribute to reduce kidney failure and dialysis rates.
Health screening also enables early detection of cancer. This will greatly increase the chance of successful treatment. Cancer is the leading cause of death in Singapore, accounting for 30% of deaths in 2011. Health education by family physicians and other healthcare providers is important so that the general public will be more aware about the warning signs of cancer. Recognition of the red flags of cancer as well as usage of comprehensive health screening packages can aid in early diagnosis of cancer. Use of vaccinations such as Hepatitis B vaccine and HPV ( Cervical cancer) vaccine will prevent liver cancer and cervical cancer respectively.
DR CHONG YEANG CHERN – As a family physician with more than 15 years of clinical practice, I encounter patients from different walks of life, different age groups and nationalities. It is important a have a solid understanding of the patient and his family. Good communication between the doctor and patient is also vital in ensuring the best possible healthcare for the patient. The following is a proposed guide to aid in your selection of health screening package.
Step 1
Be aware of your medical history – current medical problems, operation history, medications, drug allergies.
Step 2
Look out for warning signs / symptoms of common diseases.
Step 3
Find out more about your family’s medical history.
Step 4
Communicate with your family doctor about your personal and family history and health concerns. Bring along your medications, supplements, previous medical reports / results. Every one of us is different, with our own unique needs. For health screening to achieve maximal benefits and cost effectiveness, it would be good to seek guidance from your family doctor. Personalised health screening solution is available in Asia Healthpartners. Anti-aging health screening program can also be done concurrently.
Medisave can be used for cervical cancer vaccines as well as pneumonia vaccines. Please email wellness@ahppl.com.sg for more info today
You likely have heard of this term fatty liver at least once in your lifetime, either someone you know has it or maybe even been told by your own GP that you have fatty liver in your last health screening report.
It is estimated that about 25-30% of our population have fatty liver
Firstly, what exactly does fatty liver mean?
A fatty liver happens when there is abnormal and excessive build up of fats in the liver cells. Fatty liver is broadly categorized into alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
The BURNING question in everyone’s mind would probably be, “ Is that a cause for concern? Nothing serious, right?”
Here, I will share the common myths about fatty liver and talk about the facts you need to know.
Myth 1 : I will not get fatty liver because I do not take alcohol.
Previously considered a middle aged liver condition typically associated with excessive alcohol intake, the incidence of fatty liver is getting higher is the relatively younger population who takes little or no alcohol. This condition is known as non – alcoholic fatty liver disease ( NAFLD).
Apart from excessive alcohol intake, other important factors that causes higher risk of non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) include obesity – BMI > 25 ( 80%), diabetes (70%), high blood pressure, high cholesterol, problems with the thyroid, and family history of fatty liver.
Myth 2 : I do not take hard liquor, so my risk is lower
The type of alcohol does not increase or decrease the risk of fatty liver disease – it is how much you drink.
Anything more than 14 units per week would be considered possibly harmful to the liver and this may increase your risk of alcoholic liver disease.
1 unit is equivalent to half pint of beer, 1 shot of hard liquor and a glass of wine approximately 125ml.
Myth 3: I do not have fatty liver because I feel absolutely fine.
Most people with fatty liver have no symptoms or only very non-specific symptoms such as bloatedness, tiredness and upper abdominal discomfort.
Late symptoms such as jaundice ( yellow skin discolouration), swollen abdomen, skin and nail changes are related to complications of liver cirrhosis.
Early detection through a simple ultrasound scan of the liver is important.
Myth 4: Since fatty liver is so common, there is nothing to worry about, right?
Unfortunately no. The excessive build-up of fat in the liver cells will slowly cause inflammation and damage to the liver cells.
Over time, fatty liver can increase risk of liver cirrhosis( permanent scarring and hardening of the liver) and liver failure. Patients with liver cirrhosis will also have higher risk of developing liver cancer.
Myth 5 : Fatty liver is permanent
There is currently no medication or supplements that can reliably treat fatty liver. However, the good news is fatty liver disease can be reversed with lifestyle modifications, such as :
1) A well balanced diet with plenty of vegetables, whole grains, nuts and lean meat such as chicken and fish
2) Cut down carbohydrate rich food and sugar intake
3) Avoid alcohol
4) Exercise at least 3-5 times/ week, aim to reach 60-90% of your maximum heart rate (MHR : 220 – age)
We all need a healthy liver as it is a key organ in our body for regulating our metabolism and detoxifying function. Early diagnosis and treating the underlying cause for fatty liver disease are both crucial to prevent the condition from deteriorating, and this can be done through a simple health screening with blood test and an ultrasound scan of the liver.
Feeling exhausted? Aching all over? Dropping excessive amount of hair?
These may be the body’s mechanism of telling you that something is wrong. It can be due to nutrient deficiencies or medical problems.
Nutrient deficiency can occur in developing countries as well as affluent countries. With the stress from fast paced lifestyle and current pandemic, people may indulge in unhealthy food options with lots of empty calories.
Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional disorder worldwide and it is the leading cause of anaemia.
Hence, if you have the following symptoms OR if your health screening results show low red blood cell count, do discuss with your doctor regarding further investigations such as blood tests for nutrients.
IRON DEFICIENCY ANAEMIA
This is a condition whereby the body does not have enough iron for the red blood cells. Red blood cells are essential to carry oxygen from the lungs to organs and tissues in the body.
Causes of Iron Deficiency Anaemia
Complications of Iron Deficiency Anaemia
Investigations recommended for Iron Deficiency Anaemia
Treatment for Iron Deficiency Anaemia
Treatment is dependent on the cause of the iron deficiency anaemia.
Chest pain does not necessarily equate to heart pain. Chest pain refers to any discomfort or pain at the front of the body between the neck and the upper abdomen. It is quite common, with up to 25% of people experiencing it at some point in time of their lives. It can manifest in different forms ranging from sharp pain to dull ache, localised at a spot to radiation to neck/ arms/ back.
