GASTROSCOPY
What is Gastrocopy?

Gastroscopy is a day surgery procedure that allows visualization of the oesophagus, stomach and first segment of duodenum (small intestine) via a miniature video camera.


How is a Gastroscopy performed?

  • Fasting of 6 hours is required – no food and drinks
  • Intravenous sedation and local anaesthetic spray are administered. Hence the process will be well tolerated.
  • Specialist doctor will gently pass the endoscope (soft flexible tube with video camera) through your mouth, into the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum
  • The procedure lasts about 15 minutes, but you will need to rest in the recovery room for 2 to 3 hours for the sedation to wear off. Do not drive home

Why is the Gastroscopy recommended?

  • Gastric pain
  • Bloatedness, flatulence
  • Burping, nausea
  • Chest discomfort after meals
  • Difficulty swallowing, stuck sensation at throat
  • Anaemia – low red blood cell count / drop in red blood cell count
  • Black stools
  • Unexplained weight loss, poor appetite
  • History of Helicobacter pylori infection

Purpose of Gastroscopy


Gastroscopy is used to check for gastritis (stomach inflammation), Helicobacter pylori infection, peptic ulcer disease, gastric polyp and gastric cancer (stomach cancer).
